What is The Galway Sound Lab?
Founded in 2023, the Galway Sound Lab is a centre for research in acoustics, noise and vibration at the University of Galway. It is housed in the award winning Alice Perry Engineering Building.
Who are we?
Our team comprises of dedicated PhD students, post-doctoral research fellows and faculty who collectively delve into the vast realms of acoustics, noise, and vibration.
What do we do?
We perform research in all areas of acoustics - from investigating the intricate nuances of sound propagation to developing innovative noise mitigation strategies and exploring the impacts of vibration on structures, our diverse research portfolio spans the entire spectrum of acoustics.
Our Collaborations:
The Galway Sound Lab has an active outreach programme and collaborates with several programmes, on research and dissemination on topics of interest.

The International Energy Agency supports a number of research topics on wind energy. The International Energy Agency Technology Collaboration Programme (IEA Wind TCP) is an international co-operation of 24 countries and sponsor members that share information and research activities to advance wind energy deployment. Galway Sound Labs is an Operating Agent for Task 39 – Quiet Wind Turbine Technology, with a goal of accelerating the development and deployment of quiet wind turbine technology and consolidate understanding of wind turbine sound emission, propagation, and ultimately its perception by residents. The Task has convened an expert panel from Denmark, Ireland, Germany, The Netherlands and Sweden to identify best practices in the prediction, measurement, and assessment of noise, as well as investigate regulatory and socio-psychological aspects of wind turbine noise. For the 2023 AATE Festival on the theme of ‘Remapping’ the Galway Sound Lab: ·
Mapped a Soundwalk Route along the River Corrib on Google Maps riverside soundwalk - Google Maps ·
Recorded a podcast for a self-guided walk along the route .
Led in-person soundwalks along the route ·
· Produced a 3-minute short film on the soundscape: I took the one less travelled by - Eugene Mckeown.
Presented at the 'Remapping Places: Imagining our Past, Present and Future' symposium ·
